Germany: Gulf states ‘have to contribute as well’

Sep 23, 2015 | News

(23 September 2015) – German Minister of Economic Cooperation and Development, Gerd Müller, has called upon Persian Gulf states to do more to tackle the refugee crisis.

“The Gulf states have to contribute as well,” said the Minister on ARD this morning when discussing the distribution of refugees. Many of the refugees that are making their way towards Europe, in particular towards Germany, have been displaced by the civil war in Syria. “Germany cannot go it alone.”

Müller also took East European countries to task over their refusal to accept refugee quotas. “These countries have received billions in yearly subsidies from Brussels, joining the EU thanks to our solidarity”. It was “very disappointing” that those countries have refused to help tackle the crisis in “such a catastrophic manner”.

Yesterday in Brussels, EU interior ministers approved a plan to distribute 120,000 refugees throughout the EU, the plan passing via majority decision despite the objections of four East European states. (EurActiv)
